At GSK, our mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better, and live longer. We are a science-led global healthcare company focusing on discovering and delivering vaccines and medicines, combining our understanding of the immune system with cutting-edge technology to transform people’s lives.
We are seeking a highly motivated Automation Scientist (m/f/d) to support Omics workflows. This is a lab-based role requiring hands-on experience in cutting-edge laboratory automation and strong expertise in biological sample handling. The position focuses on developing automated workflows and executing large-scale, standardized sample preparation across diverse biological applications for proteomics and metabolomics analysis.
The successful candidate will design, program, and optimize automation solutions for complex laboratory processes and actively contribute to experimental work. A key aspect of the role is integrating automation platforms into biological workflows to improve throughput, robustness, and data quality.
This role requires proven experience with automation systems (e.g. Tecan, Agilent Bravo, Firefly, or similar) combined with practical knowledge of proteomics and/or metabolomics sample processing. The candidate should be able to convert manual protocols into scalable and reliable automated workflows that deliver high-quality data.
Responsibilities:
1. Design, develop, and implement automated workflows for biological sample processing across multiple assay types.
2. Operate and maintain liquid handling and robotic platforms (e.g. Tecan, Bravo), ensuring consistent performance.
3. Optimize and troubleshoot automated processes to improve efficiency and data quality.
4. Independently perform routine, standardized laboratory experiments, including planning, execution, and analysis.
5. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new automation technologies.
Qualifications:
6. Technical assistant background (BTA/CTA/MTA) or master's degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field (e.g. biotechnology, bioengineering, biochemistry, molecular biology) with additional relevant experience.
7. Hands-on experience with laboratory automation platforms (e.g. Tecan, Agilent Bravo or equivalent) with demonstrated ability to translate manual protocols into automated workflows.
8. Practical experience in biological sample preparation, ideally in proteomics and/or metabolomics
9. Exposure to AI/ML and programming (e.g. Python, R or similar) is an advantage.
10. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
This is an on-site role based in Heidelberg, Germany, which is fully integrated into GSK's Research and Development (R&D) and located on the campus of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). This diverse and stimulating environment offers a unique blend of backgrounds and expertise, fostering innovative and impactful research.
11. Opportunity to work in a cutting-edge scientific environment with access to state-of-the-art technologies.
12. Collaborative and inclusive culture that values innovation and scientific excellence.
13. Competitive compensation and benefits package.
14. Commitment to professional development and career growth.
