Dendritic Learning Models for Neuromorphic Computing
Conducting research to create a better society is our driving force at Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we strive to address the grand challenges of our time by researching a digitized society, a climate-friendly energy system, and a resource-efficient economy.
We are part of the Peter Grünberg Institute – Neuromorphic Software Eco Systems (PGI-15), led by Prof. Dr. Emre Neftci. Our mission is to explore neuromorphic computing technologies that learn and work like the brain. Inspired by the structure and function of biological neurons, we design more efficient and powerful learning systems.
The brain processes information differently than traditional computers. Signals are integrated through biophysical processes operating on long time-scales, which can be used to dynamically store information. This property can improve artificial intelligence models, but its potential has not been fully understood.
Project Overview
In this project, we will incorporate non-linear input integration mimicking dendritic dynamics into spiking neural networks. This involves designing dendritic modules in PyTorch, training and evaluating these enhanced networks on sequence learning tasks, and comparing their performance against state-of-the-art sequence learning models.
