We are Covestro. We are curious. We are courageous. We are colorful. We refine chemical material solutions with game-changing products. Let us empower you to push boundaries. Join us and our 18.000 colleagues now and together we will make the world a brighter place.

Quantum Computing meets Chemistry of the Future

In our Digital R&D (DRD) team, you'll be the bridge builder between quantum computing and chemical innovation. As part of our international team of experts, you'll develop groundbreaking quantum algorithms and drive computational chemistry forward at Covestro. You'll benefit from a unique network with cooperation partners such as the Google Quantum AI Team, the startup QC Ware, and renowned universities, researching at the intersection of industrial application and fundamental science.

In addition to our diverse benefits, you can expect an attractive starting salary between €89,400/year and €108,500/year plus a variable component for full-time employment. The starting salary depends on your qualifications and professional experience.

These exciting challenges await you

1. You develop quantum algorithms and quantum programs using frameworks like Qualtran and PennyLane

2. You work passionately on benchmarking and applying quantum computing and cutting-edge classical computational chemistry methods (e.g., GPU-accelerated DFT, CASSCF, DMRG, MLIPs)

3. You independently drive the development and implementation of workflows using these methods

4. In exchange with applied computational and laboratory chemists, you identify use cases focusing on chemical processes for Covestro's vision of a circular economy

5. You can make your scientific contribution visible through publications in professional journals, patent applications, and co-supervision of doctoral students

With this profile you can convince us

6. You hold a doctoral degree in quantum theory/quantum information/quantum computing or in theoretical/computational chemistry with a focus on method development and strong interest in the respective other field

7. You have comprehensive experience working with quantum computing programming languages such as PennyLane and Qualtran (preferred), Cirqm Qiskit, or similar

8. An impressive list of scientific publications and ideally relevant experience as a post-doc, in a technology/software startup, or an industrial R&D group distinguish you

9. You confidently master the advanced features of Python (classes, decorators, type hints) as well as relevant standard libraries (numpy, scipy, pandas, seaborn, pyscf) and testing/profiling frameworks (pytest, pyinstrument)

10. Ideally, you bring experience with professional software development workflows and tools (version control, unit testing, containers, DevOps, GitHub, Jira) and collaborative work on larger codebases

11. You are comfortable using the Linux command line and high-performance computing (Slurm, Docker, Cuda) and enjoy using AI tools (GitHub CoPilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to increase productivity

12. A strong interest and ability to find and apply new concepts from computer science, programming, and mathematics to solve scientific and technical problems characterize you

13. With your proactive work attitude, good time and self-management, and fluent English skills, you perfectly complement our team

This position has a flexible start date. Full-time employment is preferred, part-time is also possible.

This position is generally intended to be filled full-time. You'd like to work part-time? Please feel free to apply in this case as well, indicating your desired percentage.
