The Structural Virology group of Dr. Maria Rosenthalat the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) in Hamburg is looking for a highly motivated
PhD Student (m/f/d)

for the development of inhibitors against emerging RNA viruses to conduct assay development, compound screening, cell-based experiments and structure determination within an international team of scientists and in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology.
Your Profile:
1. Completed master’s degree or equivalent in biochemistry or a related field
2. Solid background and practical experience in biochemistry and molecular biology
3. Knowledge in virology and cell biology is a strong plus
4. Practical experience in cell culture and virology is a strong plus
5. Eligibility, willingness and physical fitness to work in biosafety level (BSL) 3 and 4 laboratories, successful security clearance required
6. Motivation to learn new methods
7. Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
8. Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and creatively
9. Detailed documentation of experiments and presentation of results
10. Strong team spirit and communication skills
11. Willingness and ability to supervise and train students at the bachelor and master level
12. Willingness to work both at BNITM and the Fraunhofer ITMP ScreeningPort (Hamburg)

Starting date should be October 1st 2025. The position is initially limited to 42 months and according to the rules of the public service under the TV-AVH (collective agreement of the “Arbeitsrechtliche Vereinigung Hamburg“). For the activity in the BSL-4 lab, health suitability and a successful security clearance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (Ü2) are necessary.
