The EMBL Food Services (Canteen and Cafeteria) currently accommodates up to 800 meals daily, taking into account the international background of the customers coming from approx. 90 nations. Lunch and snacks can be purchased with the means of a rechargeable lunch-card. The Canteen menu is international and consists of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes as well as several side dishes, most of which are fresh and some of which are prepared using "front cooking". Catering is also provided for courses and conferences run at EMBL’s Advanced Training Centre as well as internal meetings and social events. The weekly working time of 39 hours is usually spread over a 5-day week from 06:00 to 14:30 (Tuesdays and Thursdays 06:30 - 14:30). In the case of conferences and seminars, overtime may be worked in the evenings or at weekends. These hours may vary and be adjusted by EMBL according to need and area of assignment. This position may also include shifts in other departments such as Kindergarten Kitchen, ISG Hotel and Cafeteria. Evening and/or weekend assignments are possible. Your role The main duties of the position are: Preparation of international dishes with the aid of various cooking techniques. Preparation of all hot and cold dishes within the framework of the division of labour of a kitchen team, saucier, poissonnier, entremetier, gardemanger, pâtissier Arrangement of dishes and corresponding presentation in the free-flow system and thus direct contact with the guests Preparation, implementation and supervision of events for up to 500 people in the future Participation in the planning and implementation of promotional weeks in the EMBL canteen Monitoring and reordering stock, receiving the goods required for the kitchen, taking into account quality and freshness, as well as professional storage of the goods Maintaining equipment, kitchen utensils and the workplace, taking into account hygiene regulations Joint responsibility for instructing up to 6 trainees Independent responsible for cooking and supporting evening events, seminars and courses The Junior Cook will report to the Executive chef You have You have successfully completed your training as a chef and are characterised by a clean, careful and conscientious way of working You have a very friendly and open personality and find it easy to get along in an international environment and in cooperation with international colleagues You are responsible and independently recognise where action is needed You are able to work under pressure Reliability and independence are just as natural as punctuality and flexibility Good German and English language skills are essential The presentation of a certificate according to § 43 Para. 1 No. 1 of the Infection Protection Act or the health instruction of the public health department is a prerequisite to be able to carry out the work You may also have Previous relevant experience, also gained in an international context is advantageous Contract length: 1 year Salary: Grade 3 (monthly salary starting from 3.4k€ up to 3.7k€ after tax, before German social security deductions) Why join us EMBL is curiosity-driven, community-oriented and international.
