About the Role
Nature, the international journal of science, is looking for an eagle-eyed Subeditor to help us maintain our high standards of accuracy and readability.
The successful candidate will be comfortable reading and writing about science, a stickler for grammar and facts, and able to work autonomously and flexibly as part of a close-knit team to subedit articles for both print and online in a fast-paced environment.
Role Responsibilities:
1. Subediting material accepted or written for publication by Nature within production deadlines and to the highest possible standard as directed by the Chief Subeditor or his/her delegates.
2. Ensure text is in good English and conforms to house style.
3. Ensure display items are correct and consistent with the text.
4. Ensure that material is subbed within production deadlines.
5. Correcting proofs, artwork and pages during the production process, to ensure that the pages are finished to the appropriate standard for output
6. Write headlines and captions for Nature material as required.
7. Advise Nature editors on matters of house style and use of English.
8. Ensuring that Nature material is correctly and appropriately displayed on Nature’s website.
9. To undertake and oversee additional projects with the team (for example, maintenance of the Style Guide).
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential
10. Degree in a scientific discipline
11. Good literacy skills
12. Demonstrable ability to proofread text and artwork.
13. Excellent written and spoken communication skills, tact, diplomacy, discretion.
14. Attention to detail
15. Knowledge of word-processing — in particular Adobe InDesign — and other relevant IT skills.
16. Ability to work in a team
17. Ability to prioritize a variety of tasks
18. Strong time management
19. Broad interest in and an understanding of science.
20. Flexibility
21. Ability to cope under pressure
22. Tact in dealing with authors and colleagues
