Here’s how you’ll make a difference:

Collaborative research centers (SFBs) are the "Champions League" of the DFG-funded projects (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). They run for up to 12 years and bring together W3 university professors, postdocs, and PhD students. You will contribute to SFB1574 - the Circular Factory, which explores how future production systems can seamlessly integrate linear and circular processes, enabling used products to be transformed into new generations.



What you will do

* Design and implement core operations for Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs), such as density evaluation, parameter updates, and likelihood computation.
* Optimize the implementation for high-dimensional datasets using PyTorch, with attention to numerical stability and efficiency.
* Develop unit tests and validation routines to ensure correctness of the implemented operations.
* Benchmark your implementations against existing approaches and analyze performance on synthetic and real-world datasets.
* Investigate potential applications of these core operations in adaptive manufacturing systems, e.g., for probabilistic modeling or simulation of production processes.



What you bring to the table

* Enrollment in Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science or a related discipline
* Solid knowledge of Probability Theory, Linear Algebra, and Analysis
* Experience with PyTorch; familiarity with probabilistic modeling and Gaussian Mixture Models, or other generative models is a plus
* Strong programming skills in Python; experience with GitLab or other version-control systems is desirable
* Interest in statistical learning, generative models, and high-performance computing
* Curiosity, analytical thinking, and a problem-solving mindset (a little Google-Fu is always welcome!)
