Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplant and Vascular Surgery

Postdoc (f/d/m)

The Hannover Medical School (MHH), with about 10.000 employees the biggest company of Lower Saxony, is a university institution for research and teaching in the human and dental medicine and a university hospital of supra-maximum medical care. Research, teaching, medical care and administration work hand in hand in the integration model at the MHH-campus.

The Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs ( LEBAO ) at MHH, a basic research department of the Clinic for Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery ( HTTG ), has been working on the development of novel therapies for heart and lung diseases since 1996. The focus here is on regenerative medicine and stem cell technology.

We are searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher interested in developing iPSC derived lung organoid models and applying computational approaches to understand how environmental stressors contribute to the development of lung diseases.

Our lungs encounter the ambient environment from the first breath. Our respiratory epithelium particularly the alveolar barrier shows remarkable resilience via intricate defense mechanisms and plasticity, however, increasing emergence of lung diseases are observed as an unequivocal consequence of air pollution, genetic susceptibility and age. In our group “OrganoidTox” we are deciphering cellular perturbation patterns upon environmental insults, including (nano)particles, climate change derivatives and infectious agents in human, population-based models. With this approach, we hope to gather meaningful insights towards inhibiting the onset of lung diseases or identify new therapeutic targets for intervention. The project involves systematic computational analyses of single-cell transcriptomic datasets informing the engineering of advanced lung organoid models. Generation of organoid-based omics-datasets beyond transcriptomics will further drive hypothesis generation and functional interrogation.

Your task
* Apply human stem cell derived lung organoid models for complex perturbations
* Spearhead omics analyses of lung organoids under environmental stress
* Integration of in vivo and in vitro generated datasetsand development of innovative analysis approaches
* Analysis, visualization and biological interpretation of results
* Scientific exchange with basic researchers and computational scientists
* Daily supervision of graduate and undergraduate students, teaching opportunites
* Project team management and scientific paper writing for high-quality publications
Our requirements
* PhD degree within a relevant field and strong interest in stem cell biology, toxicology, computational biology
* Desirably demonstrated experience in human iPSCs, in vitro differentiation, and working with three-dimensional models or related disciplines. Skills in or willingness to learn computational analysis of complex data sets is required.
* Mental agility, high personal motivation for the field, as well as excellent collaboration and communication skills are required
* Willingness to work closely with an interdisciplinary research team
We offer
* A full-time position with 38.5 hours per week, initially limited to two years with the possibility of extension at one of the largest employers in the state of Lower Saxony
* Salary in accordance with TV-L with the benefits of the public sector (e.g. company pension scheme and additional insurance through VBL)
* An exciting position at the interface of research, healthcare and science management
* Vibrant environment for personal and scientific development and growth, also within the framework of The German Center for Lung Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Lungenforschung, DZL)
* Motivated, team-oriented, international and interdisciplinary environment at LEBAO with state-of-the-art laboratories, core facilities and an high performance cluster
