Head of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – Germany
We are a renewable energy developer backed by a major pan‑European infrastructure investor, scaling a strong solar and battery storage pipeline across multiple European markets.
The role leads the battery storage strategy in Germany, turning early‑stage ideas into fully permitted, ready‑to‑build projects. You’ll coordinate development, engineering, grid, finance, and external stakeholders to deliver utility‑scale BESS sites that support the company’s wider renewable energy growth and report directly to the CEO.
Responsibilities
* Define and execute the BESS strategy in line with market needs and company goals
* Run the full development lifecycle: feasibility, permitting, environmental assessments, and community engagement
* Identify and evaluate grid connection options with internal grid experts
* Build and maintain regulatory know‑how to secure all approvals required to reach run‑the‑bank (RTB)
* Manage project budgets, forecasts, and business cases with Finance
* Set technical requirements for BESS systems with Engineering
* Coordinate land identification and securing with Development and GIS
* Handle grid capacity requests and negotiate connection conditions
* Build strong relationships with grid operators, landowners, and authorities
Qualifications
* Degree in engineering, renewable energy, economics, or a related field
* 10+ years in energy infrastructure development, with at least 3–5 years in utility‑scale BESS
* Solid understanding of battery technologies, storage use cases, interconnection processes, and market participation
* Experience leading complex, multi‑stakeholder projects to completion
* Strong network in the German storage ecosystem
* Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, capable of interfacing with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
* Fluent in German and English (written and spoken)
* Willing to travel regularly and work with a high level of autonomy
