At the Automation and Sensorics in Networked Systems (ASN) Group, methods from automatic control, artificial intelligence, and networked systems are combined. A major application focus of our work are complex energy systems with a high share of decentralized, uncertain, and renewable generation. Our goal is to enable future low-carbon energy systems that support sustainable economies.
As part of a new research project “FLOW”, methods for the integrated operation of water and energy systems are being developed. The aim is to efficiently coordinate the operation of hydropower plants by jointly considering generation, storage, and water management processes, while accounting for uncertainties in inflows, energy prices, and renewable energy infeed. Modern approaches in modeling, optimization, and data-driven forecasting will be applied to enable robust scheduling and well-founded operational decision-making. The developed methods are validated through simulations as well as within a practical assistance system for control rooms. To carry out this project, we are seeking dedicated and motivated researchers.
Tasks:
1. Research activities within the above-mentioned project, focusing on the predictive and integrated operation of water and energy systems.
2. Developing and implementing models for coupled water and energy systems.
3. Developing stochastic, optimization-based approaches for the integrated operation of water and energy systems.
4. Pursuing independent research within the project's thematic scope.
5. Building required research infrastructure (., simulation servers, lab experiments, digital twins).
6. Contributing to academic activities within the group and assisting in the supervision of students.
7. Preparing scientific publications and presenting research results at conferences.
Required qualifications:
8. University degree (Diploma, Master) in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Technical Cybernetics, Applied Mathematics, or a comparable field. The required degree must be completed by the start of employment.
9. Good knowledge of systems theory and control engineering, for example in multivariable or optimal control.
10. Careful, independent, and team-oriented working style.
11. Ability and motivation to work in interdisciplinary teams.
12. Very good verbal and written communication skills in English.
13. Good verbal and written communication skills in German, or a willingness to learn German.
Further desirable qualifications:
14. Knowledge of model predictive control (MPC) and numerical optimization.
15. Knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence.
16. Experience in modeling and identification of dynamic systems.
17. Familiarity with energy systems with a high share of renewable energy.
18. Knowledge of hydrological and hydraulic systems.
19. Skills in visualization of probabilistic information.
20. A high level of organizational skills.
In the event of any differences between the German and English versions of this call for application, the German wording is legally binding.
