Summary About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and is located at the Ramstein Club Complex.This position is located in the Business Flight within the 86 FSS. Incumbent is responsible for assisting the Executive Chef in all food service programs to include supervision, procurement, storage, safeguarding and preparation of a nutritious quality food operation that meets Air Force sanitation standards. This position may offer logistical support. Responsibilities This position serves as the Sous Chef to the Executive Chef and plays a key role in executing day-to-day food service operations within the Business Flight of the Force Support Squadron. Assists in planning, coordinating, and directing culinary functions across multiple kitchen operations, including daily meal service, catering functions, and special events. Working as a hands-on chef, is responsible for preparing a wide variety of meals using advanced cooking methods, including baking, roasting, grilling, and specialized techniques for gourmet and quick-service formats. This position provides supervision during assigned shifts, assigning duties, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to established recipes, portion control standards, and presentation expectations. Enforces food safety, sanitation, and cleanliness policies and conducts routine inspections to ensure compliance with local and Air Force regulations. Plays a key role in on-the-job training, mentoring staff in modern culinary techniques and kitchen procedures, and offering informal performance feedback. In collaboration with the Executive Chef, the Sous Chef may assist in preparing menus, testing new recipes, reviewing food production data, and making recommendations to improve cost efficiency, food quality, and customer satisfaction. Supports inventory control processes by monitoring ingredient use and reporting stock levels, spoilage, or waste. This position may be tasked with setting up and executing portions of distinguished visitor events, ensuring high standards of food presentation and protocol compliance. The incumbent may also operate government vehicles to transport food, equipment, or supplies between facilities and perform additional duties as required to support the overall mission of the food service program. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualifying Experience: Progressively responsible experience in quantity cooking and preparation of a variety of food items using different techniques and equipment in a high-volume food service environment. Experience must include providing guidance or direction to food service staff, such as assigning tasks or overseeing shift operations. Must have knowledge of food safety standards, portion control, basic nutrition, and proper storage and handling procedures for food and equipment. Experience assisting with or supporting menu planning, food production, and inventory control is desirable. Must demonstrate the ability to prepare high-quality, visually appealing dishes according to standardized recipes. Must be able to stand for extended periods and work in hot, noisy, wet, or cold environments typical of commercial kitchens. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Strong communication skills in reading, writing, and speaking English are required. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. U.S. Citizens and Non-U.S. Nationals who have resided in the U.S. or U.S. Territory for three (3) or more consecutive years immediately preceding the start of Federal affiliation. All Federal NAF employees are required by PL 104-134 to have salary payments made by electronic funds transfer/direct deposit. Probationary period may be required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from hiring preferences and priority consideration eligible. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government's interest. LQA is not authorized.
