The project “Geophysical mapping to characterize the subsurface in the vicinity of Lake Laach (Eifel, Germany) using magnetotellurics (LaSEMI)” is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the priority program ICDP (International Continental Drilling Program). By measuring magnetotelluric (MT) data in the vicinity of planned drilling sites in the eastern Eifel (ICDP-EIFEL), possible connections between geodynamic processes and fluid systems and fault zones at depth will be investigated.
The advertised position involves conducting magnetotelluric (MT) measurements in the Eifel and interpreting the data obtained using 2D and 3D modelling and inversion. In addition to the logistical challenges involved in planning and conducting the experiment, strong electromagnetic disturbances in the region require the use and possible adaptation of existing MT time series processing. This position is embedded in the multidisciplinary research surrounding the Central European Volcanic Province Observatory (CVO) at the GFZ. The project and the doctoral studies will be supervised by Priv.-Doz. Dr. Ute Weckmann at the University of Potsdam.
Your responsibilities:
1. Planning and conducting MT experiments in the Eifel region (Germany)
2. Evaluating the MT data obtained using existing and advanced MT time series processing
3. 2D and 3D modelling and inversion of MT data
4. Integrating various geoscientific data into a consistent 3D model
5. Publishing and presenting the results at international conferences and in trade journals
Your qualifications:
6. A Master's degree (or equivalent) in geophysics (preferred), physics, computer science, or a related field
7. Strong computer and scientific programming skills (Python, Matlab, C, C++, etc.)
8. Experience in the evaluation of noisy magnetotelluric data
9. Experience in 2D and 3D interpretation, modelling, and inversion of magnetotelluric data
10. Very good written and spoken German
11. Good communication skills and good written and spoken English
12. Willingness and ability to participate in field work
13. Class B driver's license required (please state the ownership of an EU valid driver's license in the CV)
