OverviewThe EMBL Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit in Heidelberg is seeking a Scientific Officer to assist with general laboratory tasks and advanced cell biology and biophysical measurements in the Alba Diz-Muñoz group.EMBL is Europe’s life sciences laboratory, an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams across six sites. Its mission includes performing basic research, training scientists, and developing new instruments and methods, with active engagement in technology transfer.Your roleThe Scientific Officer will perform biophysical experiments to explore the role of cell surface mechanics in mitosis. The team focuses on cell biology, biophysics and medicine, with particular interest in mechanics at the interface between the cell and its surroundings.ResponsibilitiesManagement of general lab resourcesAssist lab members with cell culture work, including generation of stable cell linesPerform routine genetic engineering (e.g. restriction cloning, Gibson assembly)Perform or assist with biophysical techniques including atomic force microscopy measurements of cellular mechanical propertiesAssist with data presentation and visualizationYour profile / QualificationsA PhD in life sciences or biophysicsExperience with standard molecular biology and cell biology techniques, including working with cell linesExcellent organizational, documentation and reporting skills; ability to work pro-actively in a dynamic, international, interdisciplinary environmentGood interpersonal skills and solid written and spoken English; German language skills are not essentialExperience with micropatterning of cell substratesUnderstanding of biophysical measurement techniques, in particular prior experience with atomic force microscopyInclusive mindset: we encourage applicants even if not all qualifications are metContract and salaryContract length: 1 year fixed termSalary: Grade 5 or 6 (monthly salary starting at €4,031.02 after tax and before 12.05% EMBL social security deductions) plus other benefitsWhy join usEMBL is curiosity-driven, community-oriented and international.
