The new Core Facility on Microbial Automation & Culturomics in Heidelberg is seeking an experienced and highly motivated computational scientist to join the team. The facility is launched as part of the scientific Program Molecules to Ecosystems, and its goal is to enable high-throughput approaches in cultivation, genetic manipulation and phenotyping of microbial species in isolation or in communities. The facility gives researchers access and training into cutting-edge automation, and accommodates robotic systems for large-scale microbial cultivation, genetics and screens. We develop and will offer services on microbial community deconvolution and characterization – with an initial focus on bacteria of the human gut microbiome. Overall, the facility supports research projects with a broad microbial scientific spectrum. Your role The EMBL Microbial Automation & Culturomics Core Facility is looking for a Computational Scientist. The key responsibilities will include: Support researchers in the initial planning of projects, analysis and interpretation of data generated by high-throughput quantitative approaches Analyse bacterial genomic data, from assembly, annotation to repository deposition Maintain computational pipelines for recurring workflows of the facility as well as develop and implement new ones Communicate effectively analysis setup and findings You have A PhD in biological science or quantitative science (Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or Computer Science) Experience in large-scale genomics and sequencing data analysis Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R or Java Proficiency in developing user-friendly data visualisation and analysis interfaces (e.g. Shiny apps, dashboards) Several years of experience in an interdisciplinary research environment Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills High motivation to work independently, while collaborating with the team and interacting with the facility users High adaptability and problem solving skills Proficiency in spoken and written English You might also have Experience in data management technologies Experience in software development Contract length: 3 years (renewable to a maximum of 9 years) Salary : Grade 5; monthly salary from EUR 4.031,02 plus allowances based on family circumstances (after tax, excl. pension and insurance contributions) Why join us EMBL is curiosity-driven, community-oriented and international.
