The Opportunity
JD.com is seeking a highly motivated Trade Compliance Specialist to support the movement of goods across the EU and between the EU and UK. Based in Rotterdam, Netherlands or Düsseldorf, Germany, this role ensures compliance with EU customs regulations, accurate product classification under the Harmonized System (HS), and smooth coordination with customs brokers and internal stakeholders.
The ideal candidate combines strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of EU trade compliance requirements to ensure regulatory adherence and efficient customs operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare and issue timely, accurate customs clearance instructions for import and export shipments across the EU.
* Verify shipment documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin) for compliance with EU customs regulations.
* Serve as the primary contact for customs brokers, reviewing entries for accuracy of HS codes, valuation, origin, and use of special programs (e.g., EU free trade agreements, duty relief schemes).
* Lead HS classification of all products and maintain a classification database for customs filings and internal reference.
* Monitor customs compliance, support internal audits, and maintain records required by EU customs authorities.
* Track and report duty spend, clearance performance, and broker KPIs.
* Respond to regulatory inspections and daily compliance inquiries.
* Manage customs permits, Excise/Consumption duties, and refund/claims processes.
* Oversee packaging, plastic, and environmental obligations (e.g., CBAM, EPR, PPT, EUDR) in line with EU regulations.
* Collaborate with internal teams (Merchandise, Commercial Operations, Logistics, Tax, Finance) and UK teams to ensure smooth cross-border operations.
* Evaluate and implement third-party tools to improve customs process efficiency.
Requirements
* Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Finance, Logistics Management, or a related field.
* Minimum 3 years of experience in customs/trade compliance, preferably in an international e-commerce environment.
* Strong knowledge of EU customs regulations, HS classification, and environmental compliance requirements.
* Experience liaising with government regulatory bodies (EU customs authorities, national customs offices).
* Excellent MS Office skills, especially Excel.
* Detail-oriented, proactive, flexible, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
* Fluent in English; proficiency in Chinese is a strong plus. Additional EU languages (Dutch, German, French) are also a plus.
