Assistant
Inserat online seit: 23 Juli
Beschreibung

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from its generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the institute cover the entire photonic process chain ranging from opto-mechanical and opto-electronical system design to the manufacturing of customer-specific solutions and prototypes.

For the Department of »Photonic Quantum Systems« at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF), we are seeking a highly motivated research student to join the group »Quantum Imaging and Sensing«.

Research in this group focuses on applied quantum technologies to explore new possibilities for imaging techniques, microscopy, and spectroscopy and to develop technological solutions for research and industry.

What you will do

* Perform imaging of biological specimens — including thin tissue sections, various algae types, and zebrafish samples — using classical white-light microscopy followed by our experimental quantum setup.
* Follow a systematic and structured workflow: first visualize the sample using standard microscopy, then switch to the quantum system, align the sample, and acquire images under varying parameters such as exposure time and scan settings.
* Ensure the quantum microscope is properly aligned at the start of each session by testing with a benchmark sample. In case of misalignment, perform fine adjustments to restore optimal system performance.

What you bring to the table

* Student in a Physics or Photonics (Bachelor’s or Master’s)
* Basic knowledge in Python and microscopy
* Lab-experience with optical components and devices would be preferred
* Excellent written and oral communication skills in English language
* You should be comfortable performing repeatable procedures and tasks across multiple biological samples. As such, patience, consistency, and attention to detail are important qualities for this role.

You should be motivated to work for at least 6 months. Longer duration is preferred.

What you can expect

* Opportunity to work in challenging R&D projects
* Collegial, open-minded and friendly team
* Flexible working hours to balance studies and work experience
* Extensive professional support from scientific mentors
* Very good connection to public transportation

The weekly working hours will be agreed individually. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
