We offer a challenging role in the field of modern geodetic observation methods, such as satellite gravimetry, continuous terrestrial gravity measurements with superconducting gravimeters, or coordinate time series from permanent GNSS stations. These record a variety of signals attributable to ocean tides. In this role, you will work with gravity field data to monitor large-scale shifts in terrestrial water masses. For this purpose, tidal signals are usually modelled externally and separated from the observations as part of geophysical signal separation. As instruments become more precise, small partialites with complex excitation mechanisms (e.g. atmospheric-induced tides, overtides, combination tides) must increasingly be taken into account in modelling.

Your responsibilities:

1. Further development of a numerical tidal model based on shallow water equations

2. Conducting global model experiments on nonlinear interactions between (barotropic) ocean circulation and tides, with a focus on signals in the North Sea and Baltic Sea

3. Calculation of vertical and horizontal crustal deformations and various functionals of the Earth's gravity field (geoid heights, vertical gravity accelerations, deflection of the vertical, etc.)

4. Presentation of results at international conferences and in scientific publications

Your qualifications:

5. Above-average university degree (a Master`s degree or equivalent) and a doctorate in meteorology, oceanography, physics or a related field

6. Good knowledge of numerical analysis methods in global geodesy

7. Good programming skills (e.g. Fortran, Python, Octave, etc.)

8. Experience in the use of high-performance computers (e.g. at the German Climate Computing Centre)

9. Good written and spoken English communication skills

10. Structured and results-oriented approach to work

11. Creativity in problem solving and willingness to cooperate in an interdisciplinary team

What we offer:

12. Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment

13. State-of-the-art equipment

14. Public service benefits

15. Extensive training opportunities

16. Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career-Centre

17. Flexible working hours and conditions

18. Support with finding a good work-life balance offered by benefit@work

19. Institute day-care centre on site

20. Working at the Albert Einstein science park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam

21. Work place within walking distance of Potsdam main train station, or just a short ride on the shuttle bus
Start date: 1st January 2026
Fixed-term: 12 months
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
Place of work: Potsdam

Have we piqued your interest?
If so, we look forward to receiving your application by 19th October 2025 .

Required documents: CV, letter of motivation, certificates (grades)

Please use our online application form only.
