Overview
Manufacturing Engineering Manager – Optics (m/f/x) to lead optics industrialization and process engineering activities. Requires deep technical expertise in precision optical assembly and alignment, and strong leadership to build and develop a high-performing team. You will ensure optical production processes are robust, efficient, and compliant with aerospace and defense requirements.
Responsibilities
* Lead and mentor a team of Manufacturing Engineers dedicated to optical assemblies.
* Develop, qualify, and maintain manufacturing processes for optical and opto-mechanical assemblies, including Diamond Turning, Vacuum Coating, CNC Milling, Polishing, and dimensional Metrology.
* Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) activities from concept to series production, ensuring process readiness.
* Define process flow, work instructions, PFMEAs, and control plans for precision optical assemblies.
* Oversee equipment selection, qualification, and calibration for optical assembly and testing.
* Drive yield improvement, process capability, and cost reduction initiatives across the optics line.
* Act as technical lead for problem-solving, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
* Collaborate with R&D, Production, and Quality to ensure manufacturability and compliance with specifications.
* Ensure compliance with aerospace and defense manufacturing standards, as well as optical cleanliness and cleanroom requirements (ISO 5–7).
* Maintain alignment and bonding technologies roadmap (adhesives, UV curing, interferometry, laser alignment).
* Track and report KPIs for quality, process capability, cycle time, and engineering change implementation.
* Serve as subject-matter expert in optics manufacturing processes within the company.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
* 5+ years of professional experience in optics manufacturing, precision assembly, or opto-mechanical integration.
* Minimum 2 years of proven leadership/people management experience.
* Experience working in cleanroom environments and applying ISO cleanroom standards.
* Familiarity with aerospace/defense industry standards.
* Proven track record of successful NPIs, yield improvements, and process automation in optics.
* Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
* Fluency in English; German is a strong advantage.
