AND EXTERNAL Local National Applicants, who reside in Germany. Hauptaufgaben Provides technical guidance at the senior microbiologist level. Plans work and sequence of work on a daily or weekly basis as needed. Assists with incoming-sample workload and examines for adequacy and detection of any unexpected condition which should receive special handling or additional analysis. Selects methods and analyzes samples in order to obtain requested data. Analytical work will be performed using techniques such as classical microbiology with non-selective and selective media, nucleic acid extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), next generation genome sequencing, enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), scintillation counters, and other rapid microbiological and molecular techniques. Reviews background information, biological properties, matrix properties, and risk categories in the context of pertinent guidelines, regulations, and customer requirements. Provides technical expertise to help resolve technical problems relevant to testing and/or quality control procedures utilizing a professional knowledge of microbiological principles, theories, practices and established methodology sufficient to perform the full range of analysis. Reviews results of tests performed in the section to ensure adequacy of technical requirements. Operates a personal computer to access the Laboratory Management Information System (LIMS) and utilizes computer with MS Office (Professional) to prepare comprehensive reports. Manages and processes samples submitted to PHCE LS. Incumbent counts microbial plates assessing levels of quantitative growth. Additionally performs enrichment and direct cultures to detect and/or enumerate pathogens. Performs analysis for Rabies virus and vector-borne diseases using a variety of methods to include PCR, and/or direct fluorescent antibody staining. Serves as senior analyst and/or assists with implementations of new and updated rapid methods, performs in-lab comparisons on new methods. Performs and oversees the operation of the automated Vitek system, PCR systems, Vidas or ELISA washer, ELISA reader, microscopes, autoclaves, balances, centrifuges, etc. Evaluates techniques and updates laboratory SOPs according to regulatory standards and current scientific literature. Cross-trains lab personnel between food/dairy testing area, bacteriology, vector PCR, and rabies and analysis areas. Documents employee proficiency after training. Applies a broad knowledge and understanding of the science of microbiology and related sciences in skillfully applying, adapting, and modifying methods, procedures, and techniques in conducting microbiological tests on food, ready-to-eat salads and sandwiches, milk and dairy products, water, environmental and clinical samples. Performs tests for sterility, bacterial quality, aerobic plate count, coliforms, yeast and mold, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Distributes and participates in laboratory proficiency programs including review of laboratory data worksheets, final reports, documentation of participation and corrective actions. Maintains microorganism culture and quality control collections. Reviews reports and worksheets for accuracy, validity, and reproducibility, and prepares narrative report of findings as required. Applies microbial standards, specifications and guidelines to evaluate results. Reports unusual or significant pathogens to supervisor. Participates in the technical review of proficiency surveys to insure field our laboratory is performing tests correctly. Records survey tests and maintains records on the number, type of tests, individuals performing test and quality of performance achieved within the section. Engages in interchange of information and collaborative studies with other military and Federal agencies and civilian food supplies on problems of mutual interest. Conducts all work in compliance with the division's ISO 17025:2017 quality system. Maintains records, prepares workload data and other management reports, and determines requirements for supplies and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. E&T Level V: Applicants for positions in this series are required to be in possession of a bachelor's or master's degree in microbiology.
