Description Part-time data engineer/data scientist (m/f/d) for technical support in an XR-Lab: Setting up experiments to investigate the visual and acoustic dimensions of forest change at the Excellence Cluster Future Forests, University of Freiburg. • 50% part-time, fixed-term for 3 years (third‑party funded). • Remuneration up to TV‑L 11, depending on qualifications. • Starting date: April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Excellence Cluster Future Forests is an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to adaptation and transformation of forests in the face of global change. This project investigates long‑term changes in forest structures and soundscapes and their impact on human well‑being, reconstructing visual and acoustic representations from the 1970s to today and testing their effect in virtual reality. Your Tasks Collect 3D video material and audio recordings at designated forest sites Conduct sampling campaigns autonomously, tailored to the experimental design and XR‑Lab integration. Manage and maintain the technical equipment. Collaborate with PhD candidates, postdocs, and the XR Future Forest Lab team. Provide technical support for tasks at the XR‑Future Forest Lab. Support the conductance of the VR experiments Guide and support participants through VR forest experiences. Support recruitment of participants. Contribute to scientific publications. Support bioacoustic data collection at forest sites. Collaborate with interdisciplinary and international research teams. Actively participate in cluster activities, workshops, and outreach events. Your Profile Ability to conduct sampling campaigns independently in the field for video/soundscape recordings. A Class B driving licence is essential. Strong interest or experience in acquiring the multimedia skills required to process recordings. Experience or interest in XR is an advantage; initial experience with Unreal Engine and willingness to learn Unreal are particularly beneficial. Strong social skills to support and manage participants in social XR Lab experiments. Reliable, flexible, and motivated work ethic. Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team; proficiency in spoken and written German and English. Completed university degree (B.Sc. or equivalent) in related disciplines (media studies, computer vision, data science, media‑informatics, informatics, engineering, forest sciences, ecology, environmental sciences, geography).
