Technical Role Profile: Data Centre Infrastructure and Network Operations Specialist
1. Position Overview
This technical role supports data centre infrastructure and network operations, with responsibilities including installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of IT hardware systems. The position involves close coordination with server and network teams, vendor management, documentation, and adherence to ITIL practices. The ideal candidate possesses both hands-on technical skills and project management capabilities.
2. Qualifications
Educational Background
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field preferred.
Equivalent education accepted: Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent qualification from a three-year college or technical institution with a focus in electronics.
Certifications & Technical Knowledge
Familiarity with ITIL frameworks; prior experience in an ITIL-governed environment is advantageous.
Language Proficiency
Fluent in English (both written and verbal).
3. Work Experience Requirements
58 years of experience in Data Center Infrastructure or Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems.
3+ years of hands-on experience in installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of network hardware.
4. Technical Skill Set
Infrastructure Experience
Skilled in rack and stack, cable management, and physical installation of data center and network hardware.
Ability to understand data center hardware architecture and L3 troubleshooting procedures.
Proficient with fiber (including MPO), copper, and data cable installation and maintenance.
In-depth understanding of IT networking principles, physical media handling, and equipment operation.
Experience in Infrastructure Move, Add, Change (IMAC) and break-fix activities.
Ability to identify and replace defective components (e.g., line cards, fibers, cables).
Project Management and Soft Skills
Strong task queue and SLA/KPI management.
Escalation handling, RCA/CAR governance, and external vendor coordination.
Customer-facing experience; effective written and verbal communication.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Detail-oriented, high-quality work output with proactive and efficient behavior.
5. Key Responsibilities
Installation and Maintenance Tasks
Test and install cables/optics for new circuits, including copper, fiber, and power cables.
Support for rack and stack operations; assist server and network teams with hardware deployment.
Perform labeling, patching, and asset tagging as per SOPs.
Follow procedural task lists and submit detailed reports.
Functional testing and failure analysis of hardware systems.
Execute planned maintenance and circuit migrations.
Create and test RJ45 copper cables; reseating and swapping of cards and components.
Break-Fix and Technical Support
Cleaning and inspecting optical fibers (LC fiber scoping).
Replace or install loopbacks and faulty optical cables.
Perform Bit Error Rate (BER) testing.
Replace or reseat line cards and faulty components; RMA handling and diagnostics.
Reboot chassis, configure remote access and basic storage array settings.
Assist in remote circuit testing using loop-back cables.
Power cycling and complete hardware unit replacements.
