Chief Compliance Officer | Crowdsourced Hedge Fund

Role summary
This is an expression of interest for a Chief Compliance Officer. The CCO will design and own the regulatory, legal, and operational compliance framework that enables Craig Street Capital to launch and scale a pilot fund and platform. You’ll translate regulatory requirements into product and operational controls, lead contributor and investor compliance flows, and partner closely with product, engineering, and fundraising to ensure our systems are auditable and institutionally ready.
Core responsibilities
Regulatory strategy & governance
* Define global regulatory strategy for platform and fund activity across key jurisdictions (US, UK, EU, DE, APAC)
* Establish governance, policies, and escalation frameworks for compliance oversight and board reporting
* Maintain relationships with external counsel, regulators, and auditors
Fund structuring & operational compliance
* Design compliance controls across fund structuring, investor onboarding, investor reporting, and capital deployment
* Implement KYC/KYB, AML, sanctions screening, accreditation, and investor suitability workflows
* Oversee trade and allocation review procedures, conflict‑of‑interest policies, and contributor attestations
Product embedding & tech partnership
* Work with engineering to embed compliance primitives into product flows (attestations, immutable logs, audit exports)
* Define data retention, encryption, access controls, and evidence trails required for regulatory audits
* Provide compliance input to scoring, contributor reputation, and governance rules to ensure auditable funding decisions
Risk, monitoring & controls
* Build real‑time monitoring, suspicious activity detection, and reporting processes; define KPIs and SLAs for compliance operations
* Lead incident response, remediation, and regulatory reporting when required
* Conduct periodic compliance reviews, internal audits, and tabletop exercises
Team building, leadership and external coordination
* Hire and lead initial compliance team; set competency roadmap for the next 6–12 months
* Coordinate with external counsel, fund administrators, and service providers
* Prepare compliance documentation for investor due diligence and VC fundraising
Compliance & institutional readiness
* Embed compliance controls into the stack (KYC/KYB flows, contributor attestations, investor reporting exports)
* Work with CCO to ensure systems meet regulatory and audit requirements for pilot fund deployment
Role requirements
Experience & seniority
* 12+ years of compliance, legal, or regulatory experience within asset management, hedge funds, fintech, or financial services; 5+ years in senior leadership roles.
* Prior experience at an emerging manager, platform business, or regulated fund launch strongly preferred
Qualifications & credentials
* JD, LLM, or equivalent advanced legal qualification strongly preferred; mix of law and compliance backgrounds acceptable
* Professional certifications highly desirable (e.g., CAMS, ACC, CFA, or equivalent compliance/AML credentials)
Technical and product fluency
* Familiarity with SEC, FCA/ESMA, BaFin, and cross‑border regulatory regimes
* Practical experience translating regulatory requirements into product and operational controls, including KYC/KYB flows, AML tooling, data retention, and auditability
* Comfortable reviewing model governance, backtesting evidence, and algorithmic decision controls
* Pragmatic risk manager who balances institutional rigor with early‑stage velocity
* Clear communicator capable of guiding technical and commercial teams through regulatory tradeoffs
* Builder mentality: accepts ambiguity, prioritizes critical controls, and scales processes from first principles
* Equity: significant equity stake commensurate with founding leadership (details discussed based on experience and commitment) with standard 4‑year vesting and 1‑year cliff.
* Salary: initially deferred; competitive salary to commence once funding milestones are met
Working style
* Time commitment: part‑time acceptable initially (20–30 hrs/week); candidate must be prepared to transition to full‑time once venture funding is secured
* Decision authority: co‑founder level input on governance, product compliance design, and fund operations
* Location: Berlin preferred for proximity to the founding team; remote candidates in compatible European time zones considered
Stage, logistics & expression of interest
* Stage: Pre‑revenue, pre‑MVP; small group of advisers and potential investors (angels and VCs) providing feedback
* Funding: bootstrapped today; formal hiring for this role is conditional on successful VC fundraising
