Your mission at Mercanis As a Senior Backend Engineer at Mercanis, you bring a pragmatic mindset, write clean and scalable code, and thrive in a modern agile product environment. Please note that this role is based in Berlin and is not remote. To be considered, candidates must currently reside in Berlin, Germany and hold a valid work permit for employment in Germany- should you require it due to your country of origin. Your Responsibilities on this role You will design and build scalable backend services, using Node.js and NestJS to power an event-driven, cloud-native architecture that supports enterprise use cases. You will shape core system architecture, make foundational technical choices, and contribute to patterns that support long-term maintainability and scale. You will write clean, modular, and testable code, with a strong focus on test-driven development and automated quality assurance. You will collaborate closely with Product and Design, helping translate business problems into simple, reliable technical solutions. You will mentor and guide teammates, supporting knowledge sharing and uplifting engineering standards across the team. You will drive delivery from idea to production, iterate quickly, and embrace fast feedback cycles to learn and improve continuously. You will explore and introduce new technologies, bringing fresh ideas to improve performance, developer experience, and reliability. Role requirements Technical Leadership 7 years of professional software development experience, with at least 3 years using Node.js. Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript; familiarity with NestJS (or similar frameworks) is a plus. Deep understanding of asynchronous programming, distributed systems, and microservice architecture. Experience working with event-driven or serverless systems. [Bonus] Exposure to frontend technologies like Svelte. [Bonus] Experience with CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, or infrastructure-as-code. Engineering Philosophy Passionate about writing clean, modular, and testable code. Experienced with test-driven development and quality-focused delivery practices. Comfortable making architectural decisions and guiding others in trade-offs and best practices. Growth & Ownership Interested in evolving into a Tech Lead role over time — driving architecture, mentoring peers, and helping shape engineering standards. Soft Skills Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken. Collaborative mindset and willingness to take initiative.
