The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plays a central role in the innovation process by focusing on key technologies of relevance to the future and on the utilization of the results in business and industry. As a trailblazer and driving force for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it helps to shape our society and our future.
For over 35 years, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology in Berlin has stood for excellence in production science. We are dedicated to combining science and practice in the field of industrial production and offer application-oriented system solutions for the entire range of industrial tasks - from product development to the production process, the maintenance of capital goods and the recycling of products through to the design and management of factory operations.
What you will do
As part of a current research project, we are investigating the welding of three-sheet joints using resistance spot welding (WPS) in order to predict parameters for the actual welding process. In your thesis, you will build an AI model that determines characteristic features of the welding project based on simulation data from a finite element simulation. You will structure and plan the simulation tests, evaluate them, and build an AI model based on them. You will then examine this model for the sensitivity of various input data and analyze the transferability and expandability of the model to different material compositions.
What you bring to the table
* Studies in Computational Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering, or comparable (Bachelor's/Master's)
* Programming skills, preferably in Python
* Interest in modern manufacturing technologies and welding processes
* Programming experience, ideally in Python
* Knowledge of finite element methods or AI models is an advantage
* Structured, independent working style and ability to work in a team
What you can expect
* A great team and open, collegial cooperation
* Insight into modern technologies and innovative manufacturing processes
* Collaboration with industrial partners
* Flexible time management for your thesis
* Opportunity to incorporate your own ideas into your work
The work can be supervised at TU Berlin or in cooperation with other universities.
No remuneration is paid.
The duration of the thesis depends on the requirements of your university.
