INNOVATIONS FROM A SINGLE SOURCE
CHANGE STARTS WITH US

At Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF, we know our technologies like the back of our hand. As one of the few scientific institutions worldwide, we conduct research along the entire semiconductor value chain and on tailor-made synthetic diamonds. Whether high-frequency circuits for communication technology, voltage converter modules for electromobility, laser systems for measurement processes, or innovative hardware and software for quantum computers and quantum sensors: we develop tomorrow's technology from a single source for a sustainable and secure society.

Our Epitaxy Department is internationally recognized as a center of excellence for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), in which atomically thin, functional semiconductor layers are deposited on semiconductor wafers.

Be part of change

As an experienced technical college or university graduate (Bachelor) in a technical-physical field, you will work in a creative research environment at the highest professional level without necessarily pursuing a scientific career yourself. We offer you the opportunity to apply your knowledge of ultra-high vacuum technology and molecular beam epitaxy of crystalline semiconductor layers in the operation of our large-scale facilities.

* The focus of your work will be on the implementation and further development of sophisticated MBE processes for the realization of innovative optoelectronic and electronic components within the framework of national and international research projects.
* You will independently operate a multi-wafer MBE system to produce thin-film structures for optoelectronic and electronic components based on III/V compound semiconductors.
* You will develop and optimize existing and new MBE processes in order to realize novel material combinations and components. In doing so, you will plan and carry out independent epitaxy series, including documentation and statistical evaluation.
* In close cooperation with other working groups and departments at the institute, you will characterize the manufactured layers and perform a quality assessment.
* You will monitor plant availability and maintenance. Together with the group leader, you will coordinate maintenance and repair work and implement technical improvements in consultation with the plant manufacturer.

What you contribute

* Bachelor’s degree in physical engineering, microsystems technology, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a comparable education.
* Several years of practical experience in operating molecular beam epitaxy systems.
* You enjoy analytical work and scientific questions.
* You are physically fit enough to work occasionally with respiratory protection.
* You are characterized by your team spirit, communication skills, and independent working style. You are goal-oriented, extremely precise, and conscientious in your work.
* Good English skills.

What we offer

* Modern and international work environment: Work in a modern and international work environment with room for independent work and creative design.
* Comprehensive development opportunities: Unleash your potential with a wide range of professional and personal development opportunities.
* A variety of additional benefits: Benefit from our additional benefits such as a company pension plan (VBL), a discounted Germany-wide rail ticket, corporate benefits, and health offerings such as Pilates.
* Flexible working time models: Enjoy the freedom to organize your working hours flexibly with flexitime.
* Family-friendly workplace: Take advantage of our family-friendly offers, including daycare places at the “Junikäfer” daycare center in Freiburg, a child-friendly office, and counseling services for home and eldercare.
* Attractive transport connections: Use our free parking garage with e-charging stations. A Frelo station (bike rental system) and a bus stop are also located directly at the institute.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position is initially limited to two years, but we are looking for long-term cooperation. This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
