Your Responsibility
Holding the wellbeing of the individual student foremost, School counsellors share important student/family information in a collaborative manner with Administration, Pastoral Care, Learning Support and Nursing staff; while protecting the private nature of the information in accordance with German Law.
Your duties
* Models the values and professional demeanour as expressed in the BIS Mission, Vision and Mandate
* Deliver developmentally appropriate activities and services directly to students or indirectly for students through collaboration with other school personnel
* Teach and/or support the Personal, Social, and Health Education(PSHE) Programme as appropriate per school
* Provide professional assistance and support to individual or small groups of students during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change or other situations impeding student success
* Recognize and respond to student mental health needs and assist students and families seeking resources
* Provide short-term support to students in line with the role of school counselling. (School counsellors do not provide therapy or long term counselling.)
* Share strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators and BIS community organisations
* Collaborate with BIS leadership, teachers, parents and the community to support student achievement
* Provide referrals for students and families to professional resources for additional assistance and information
* Support crisis intervention.
* Contribute to the wider school culture through involvement in classrooms, assemblies, after-school activities, and field trips
* Share relevant resources that support the Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) and Sex and Relationships Education curriculums
* Collaborate with the Head of Student Wellbeing & Community Welfare on school-wide activities to support student wellness
* Provide parent/teacher consultation and support as needed
* Serve on collaborative teams to support students and staff
* Assist in the development of student Individual Education Plans and/or in-class support plans where counselling is needed
* Liaise with the school nurse to support students who are in need of counselling support
* Liaise between the school, home and outside agencies and professionals to which the student may be referred for additional assistance
* Maintain a directory of referral agencies and professionals
* Assist the principal, pastoral leaders, and teachers with transitioning new and departing students in and out of BIS
* Gain familiarity with German law regarding school children
* Practice and support guidelines and safeguards regarding “Privacy and German data protection laws”
Your profile
Skills/Qualifications:
* A master's degree or higher in school counselling, social work, or counselling psychology or the equivalent from an accredited graduate school
* Counselling experience within a school setting
Personal/Professional qualities:
* Actively contribute to a positive work environment
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
* Demonstrate personal and emotional boundaries in order to ensure the candidate’s own well-being
* A strong awareness of child protection and a commitment to ensure the safety of our students
* An understanding of the experiences of EAL students, LGBTQ+ students, students with learning disabilities, and students in transition
* Proactive in seeking help and guidance
* Continue to seek and take advantage of further professional development opportunities
* Maintain standards of privacy as provided by German data protection laws and ASCA standards
* Enthusiasm for working with a diverse international student population
* Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate framework and mission statement, preferred
