Responsibilities
1. Identifying patenting opportunities in research and development projects in line with Evonik’s business requirements
2. Defining, obtaining, and enforcing legally valid intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, utility models, and designs) domestically and internationally in accordance with Evonik’s business needs
3. Representing the Evonik Group and its cooperation partners before (inter)national authorities and courts independently
4. Challenging third-party intellectual property rights and defending Evonik’s intellectual property against third-party attacks
5. Preparing expert opinions and evaluating Evonik’s and third-party IP positions domestically and internationally prior to the market launch of new products and large-scale processes, as well as during the execution of research projects
6. Contributing to and, if necessary, initiating the development and implementation of intellectual property strategies in international cross-functional teams, and preparing expert opinions to safeguard Evonik’s know-how and freedom to operate in research, development, production, and marketing
7. Monitoring and enforcing compliance with applicable regulations and legal provisions regarding patent, utility model, trademark, and employee invention law
8. Advising on research, cooperation, licensing, and confidentiality agreements in collaboration with the legal department, and negotiating contracts with a focus on IP
9. Reviewing and approving new products, brochures, packaging, and publications
Requirements
10. Successfully completed studies in chemistry or chemical process engineering, preferably in the field of organic, inorganic, or polymer chemistry
11. Successfully completed qualification as a registered representative before the European Patent Office or a comparable qualification at a national patent office (e.g., German Patent Attorney), with relevant professional experience in intellectual property and willingness to obtain registration as a European Patent Attorney
12. Several years of professional experience in an industrial company, preferably in the chemical industry; alternatively, experience in a private law firm
13. Preferably experience in dealing with universities and other research collaborations; experience in drafting IP-related contracts is desirable
14. Experience in leading complex projects within interdisciplinary teams
15. Fluent English skills; good knowledge of French and/or German is desirable
16. Strategic thinking, negotiation skills, and strong customer orientation with a passion for research and innovation; ability to quickly understand technological developments
17. Integrative personality with strong communication skills and team spirit in an international environment
18. High level of initiative and flexibility
