Doctoral Researcher's position on "Structural tree response to stress
at the wood-to-tree scale"
The international DFG Research Training Group FORSCALE "Scale effects in Forest Adaptation
to Climate Change" explores how forest ecosystems can be actively adapted to climate
change. The German-Canadian doctoral programme integrates ecological, social, economic,
and legal perspectives across multiple scales – from molecular processes to landscapes, and
from local to political levels. Forests are understood as complex adaptive systems in
constant interaction with society and the environment.
FORSCALE is interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, aiming to provide innovative solutions to
global challenges invites applications for doctoral positions (E13, 65%, 3.5 years, starting
from 1 October 2025).
Research Topic: The doctoral thesis is set up to conduct research on the interactions
between tissue, organ, and whole-tree scales is essential to define tipping points and
tolerance limits to stress. Abiotic stresses will be experimentally induced in German and
Canadian forests. Structural stress responses will be studied from tissue to tree level using
tree-ring analysis, quantitative wood anatomy, and xylogenesis. Sampling will cover different
tree heights, species, and ages. Wood tissue data will be combined with terrestrial laser
scanning to derive 3D architecture and assess how external shape correlates with internal
tissue responses. With this innovative multiscale approach the doctoral research project
aims to provide quantitative insights into buffering capacity and stress response dynamics
across scales,
The position is limited to 31. März 2029. The salary will be determined in accordance with TVL-E13.
We will be particularly pleased to receive applications from women for the position advertised here.
