Overview


The Head of Engineering position is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to join the PM Group Leadership team out of the quickly growing Frankfurt office located in Germany.

This is a client facing and leadership position that will require the ability to inspire confidence in staff as well as from 1st client contact through proposal preparation and project execution.

The ability to motivate and mentor others in a dynamic growing office environment is required.

Proven design excellence experience in complex (life sciences / biopharma / pharmaceutical) facilities is desired.

Responsibilities


Essential Job Functions:

* Provide Leadership to the PM Group Frankfurt area Engineering Team which will included overseeing the leadership of various disciplines, including; Process, Mechanical, Electrical, and Building Services.
* Be a part of the Leadership Team within the Frankfurt area office and overall German operation.
* Be an Ambassador for the Company, as you interact with our clients providing excellent services.
* Lead, execute and oversee conceptual design studies.
* Lead, execute and oversee detailed engineering projects, directly and through the supervision of other engineers.

Responsibilities:

* Ensure that the office has a strong technical ethos centered on effective and efficient delivery of the design of the project scope.
* Ensure each Technical Discipline in the office has the required mix of knowledge, skill, experience, and competence.
* Ensure design services are executed in compliance with PM Group’s QMS [Quality Management System].
* Drive Engineering and PM Group Improvements to ensure designs are safe and delivered with maximum efficiency.
* Lead innovation to ensure PM Group remains at the fore front in engineering design, e.g. BIM, 3D tools, design analysis, etc.
* Lead Engineering developments to ensure full alignment with group and local office strategy, i.e. multi office execution, Managed Services, increased sectoral reach, execution of projects in other regions, etc.
* Ensure the engineering department managers have common goals and objectives in regards to supporting the PM Group Strategy.
* Lead the teams to stay in compliance with PM Group HR policies and procedures.
* Effectively communicate PM Group’s vision.
* Set strategic direction for Engineering Departments.
* Lead department managers and their teams to deliver strategy and business results.
* Act as in integral part of the Frankfurt business unit Leadership Team.
* Demonstrate a clear understanding of the commercial aspects of project delivery (resource-hours and capital cost).
* Demonstrate a good awareness of developments within client organizations and markets.
* Participate in commercial and risk reviews of projects, i.e. Bid No Bids, Corporate Risk Assessments, etc.
* Input to proposals – write-ups, commercial reviews, develop execution strategies, etc.
* Minimize unsold hours across the departments, achieve the agreed utilization rates across all engineering departments
* Control / Standardization of salaries, ISP costs, etc.
* Promote commercial awareness amongst departments.
* Interact and communicate with Discipline Heads in the office to ensure co-ordination of activities.
* Work with Discipline Heads to develop execution strategies for projects to drive efficiency and maximize multi office execution.
* Conduct an annual profiling exercise with each department and prepare an office level capacity and capability report.
* Agree upon actions with each department head for the year ahead.
* Ensure Engineering Disciplines keep abreast of current technology, regulatory (including Environment Health and Safety), and industry standards within their disciplines.
* Ensure PM Group H&S Policies and Procedure are fully implemented across all engineering disciplines.
* Represent PM Group positively with clients and manage customer interface as appropriate. Develop and maintain good customer relationships with an aim to winning work.
* Support Business Development activities.
* Ensure each department head prepares an annual training plan in line with corporate strategy and business unit requirements.
* Attend conferences and networking events as appropriate.
* Support the development of resources to meet project (office and out-of-office services) requirements.
* Provide technical expertise to projects as needed.
* Provide input on projects particularly during Feasibility and Concept Stages, as well as BoD, Detailed Design and CA Phases.
* Participate in PM Group’s Technology Group as appropriate.
* Ensure technical documents are prepared in accordance with PM Group procedures and project requirements, i.e. schedule.
* Prepare and/or check capital cost estimates.
* Ability to assume role of Project Manager / Design Manager on Projects as required.
* On select projects, be the Technical Interface with the Client, Lead the Design Team, Lead the Design Process, Lead the Design of Project Scope, be the Technical Interface with the other Project Stakeholders.

Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Masters level or above is preferred).
* 15+ Years of professional experience, ideally in Germany.
* Broad experience with interdisciplinary coordination on projects.
* Experience with commercial management at both departmental and discipline level is preferred.
* Fluent German and English.
* Good communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to work within a multi-discipline team environment while implementing proven conflict management skills.
* Good organizational and time management skills with an ability to produce quality work and achieve project deadlines within budget.
* Demonstrated successful client management and negotiating skills.
* Self-starter and decision maker with a positive outlook and a clear focus on quality and business objectives.
* Strong work ethic.
* Ability to travel as needed; typically project specific.
* Proven ability to plan ahead, act with integrity as well as be pro-active and decisive.
* Able to critically assesses own performance and performance of others.
* Excellent commercial skills with the ability to manage projects to budget resource-hours and commercial return targets.
