The Competence Center of Autonomous Digitalization Technologies at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies for fully automated reconstruction of cultural heritage and industrial objects. Depending on the object characteristics and quality requirements, different capture systems are applied.
Calibration of 3D scanning technologies is the critical first step for the accurate digitization of object geometries, surface characteristics, and material properties. While conventional pipelines rely on generalized camera models, standard calibration targets, and associated algorithms, our in-house systems employ specialized models and methods. In this role, you will refine and optimize these models, algorithms, and calibration targets, and seamlessly integrate them into our 3D scanning technologies. The goal is a robust, reproducible, and highly accurate calibration that delivers the highest-quality 3D reconstructions.
Be part of change
You will receive a comprehensive introduction to classical calibration pipelines, including camera models, calibration targets, and algorithms, followed by an overview of our in-house specialized methods. In parallel, you will work in experimental setups, plan and capture calibration datasets, and translate the results into practice.
A fully autonomous calibration pipeline is already available for our 3D scanning systems. You will refine and optimize it by advancing the algorithms, refining the camera models, and improving the targets. You will integrate, test, and validate the pipeline across different scanning systems. The goal is a robust, universally applicable calibration pipeline that integrates seamlessly with diverse 3D scanning technologies and ensures the highest-quality 3D reconstructions.
