Research Chair in Applied Agricultural and Food Data Science
The African-German Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems and Applied Agricultural and Food Data Science (UKUDLA) invites applications for the position of a Research Chair: Applied Agricultural and Food Data Science (Assoc. Prof./Prof. level), funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
* The Research Chair will be hosted at the University of the Western Cape (Cape Town, South Africa)
* The Chair will play a key leadership role in building interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research capac-ity in agri-food systems and data science, support doctoral training, mentor early-career researchers and lecturers, and coordinate joint activities with partner institutions in South Africa, Germany, and Malawi. The Chair will enhance the Centre’s profile through its research agenda, supervision, publications, as well as collaborative and transfer initiatives. Key responsibilities include managing research data and securing funding opportunities. The Chair will also support academic exchanges, develop data science short courses and sustainable strategies for the Centre.
* Applicants must be EU citizens with recent residence in Germany and ties to a German university. A Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields with expertise in agri-food applications is required. Candidates should have teaching experience in German universities and a strong publication and supervision record. International research presence and leadership experience in diverse academic environments are essential.
* The duration of the contract position is tied to the project’s duration which ends December 2029, with appointment starting earliest 1 February 2026. Applications can be submitted until 15 th October 2025 .
