The role
The Payments Platform team is the backbone of our financial infrastructure in HelloFresh. We are responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the core payment systems that power every transaction across the organization. We own nearly 80% of the backend services for the Payments Tribe, our team plays a critical role in ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of our end-to-end payment ecosystem. The primary responsibility of a Senior Backend Engineer in the Payments Platform squad is to lead the enhancement of the core backend services & ensure that payment core services remain scalable, resilient, and secure. This role also involves close collaboration with engineers from other payment squads to ensure a seamless payment experience for both existing and new customers.
What you’ll do
1. Take ownership of the end-to-end process, including architecture, design, development, deployment, and operations of data pipelines, applying DevOps practices, pair programming, and other cutting-edge methodologies.
2. Actively contribute as a solution-oriented member within autonomous, cross-functional agile teams, collaborating with product owners.
3. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of HelloFresh's core product and architecture, serving as an ambassador for software solutions and providing support and mentorship to colleagues.
4. Work with state-of-the-art technologies like AWS Cloud, Go/Kotlin, Kafka, Kubernetes, Istio, and more.
What you’ll bring
5. Strong backend development skills in a microservices architecture, with proficiency in one of the following languages: Golang, Java, or Kotlin
6. Hands-on knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools, particularly Docker and Kubernetes and a solid understanding of CI/CD principles, with practical exposure to modern deployment pipelines
7. Familiarity with software design and testing methodologies such as TDD, BDD, DDD, and distributed system patterns
8. Well-versed in the full development lifecycle—from writing unit and integration tests to profiling, tuning, and deploying distributed applications
9. Proficiency in working with relational databases and experience with event-driven systems
10. Prior experience in the Payments domain, including working with third-party integrations (like as payment gateways) will be a plus.
