Electrical engineer in the field of hydrogen

Bremerhaven

Beschreibung

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes a reality every day. Our focus topics are: offshore wind energy, hydrogen, test infrastructure and digitization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of the wind energy and hydrogen economy, minimize risks, and increase cost efficiency. Do you want to join us in shaping a sustainable future?

Be part of change

You will be part of the group “HLB – Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven” at our site in Bremerhaven. We operate a hydrogen test field, HLB for short, with an extensive test infrastructure, which we utilize to research the interaction between wind turbines and electrolytic hydrogen production in greater detail. We test electrolyzers, fuel cells, and other components, both individually and in combination, with respect to the dynamic performance and integration of wind energy into the energy system of the future. At present, the team consists of four employees and several students. We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, are particularly important to us.

You will take on tasks in the planning, setting up, and testing of electrical systems such as medium-voltage, low-voltage, and converter systems in the hydrogen economy sector. This will include advancing the technical integration of new DUTs by aligning interface data and planning, implementing, or coordinating the electrical connection. Depending on the respective test requirements, you will be responsible for the coordination with the local grid operator and organize joint test projects with other groups within IWES. In future research and industry projects, you will plan system modifications and expansions, coordinate companies and tenders for the implementation, and perform both the commissioning and operation yourself and/or supervise necessary steps.

In addition, you will be part of the HLB’s operations team and involved in day-to-day operations on site. This will include hands-on tasks such as operating converters and switchgears as well as troubleshooting. In the future, you should also obtain switch operation authorization, enabling you to offer support in electrical safety procedures and operations at the HLB. Furthermore, you will author publications on our scientific findings and publish them in specialist journals.

What you contribute

You have completed your diploma or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar subject. Did you perhaps also complete vocational training in the field of electrical engineering beforehand? Are you familiar with designing and operating medium- and low-voltage systems, and do you understand the relevant requirements and considerations? Perhaps you also have experience in test bench operation? Great, then you should definitely keep reading!

It would be an advantage if you have already gathered experience working on EU-funded projects, maybe even in a technical project management role. Are you also familiar with programming in Python? Wonderful! Do not worry if your profile does not cover everything yet: You can also develop with us. Here at IWES, we operate on an international level – a good command of German and English will make your day-to-day work easier.
