The Centre for Organismal Studies Heidelberg (COS Heidelberg) is a central scientific institution of Heidelberg University with 23 research groups representing the entire breadth of the life sciences in research and teaching. The following full-time, permanent position is available in the central IT infrastructure of the centre from the earliest possible date:
IT engineer (f/m/d)
with a focus on operations and research data management
Your tasks:
Consolidation and further development of the center′s research data management:
1. Implementation of data backup and data storage concepts in cooperation with IT colleagues and scientists at COS Heidelberg and the University Computing Center
2. Management and migration of large amounts of data
3. Metadata management and archiving
Planning, implementation, operation and documentation of complex IT projects in the areas of IT infrastructure, servers, administration and data centers:
4. User administration and rights management
5. Network configuration and operation, including firewall systems, in cooperation with the University Computing Center
6. Client management under Windows, Mac and Linux OS
7. Support for virtual infrastructure
8. Installation and administration of hardware servers and virtual machines (primarily Linux OS)
9. Setup and operation of web services under Docker, database systems, file servers
10. Server backup support
11. Procurement, commissioning, support and maintenance of hardware and software
12. Incident and problem management
13. Creation and maintenance of technical documentation for the server infrastructure
14. Development and monitoring of IT security concepts
15. IT contact person for scientists in cooperation with the IT group at COS
16. Training of users
Your profile:
17. Completed scientific higher education, (Master′s degree or university diploma) in the field of computer science, e. g. computer science, data science, bioinformatics or a related field or in the natural sciences
18. At least 3 years of professional experience in the planning, implementation and optimization of complex IT infrastructures
19. Sound network knowledge (security, VLAN, routing, switching, firewall)
20. Very good knowledge of Linux, as well as good knowledge of Windows, Windows Server and macOS
21. Knowledge of virtual infrastructures and container solutions (VMware, Docker)
22. Knowledge of automated tools for the installation, configuration and administration of heterogeneous computer environments
23. Sound knowledge in the areas of web services, server administration
24. Knowledge of designing and managing large storage systems
25. Experience with project and network documentation
26. Experience with incident and problem management
27. High level of communication skills and reliability, ability to work in a team as well as independently
28. Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English

The position is generally divisible and remunerated according to TV-L.
