Persistent HBV infection in more than 250 million individuals worldwide causes chronic hepatitis and ensuing complications like liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. We aim to understand the molecular mechanisms by which virus-specific CD8 T cells are rendered dysfunctional through a recently published liver immune rheostat mechanism (Bosch et al. Nature In a second project, we aim to overcome the defect of conventional virus-specific CD8 T cells to eliminate virus-infected hepatocytes by harnessing a particular effector CD8 T cell function to execute auto-aggressive killing (Dudek et al.
