Doctoral Researcher in Infection Biology (m/f/div)
commencing on January 1, 2026 or upon agreement. We offer a part-time position (65%, fixed-term position for 3.5 years) at the Leibniz-Institut für Naturstoff-Forschung und Infektionsbiologie (Hans-Knöll Institut) in Jena. In this project, the applicant will investigate how metabolism adapts during the early and late phase of severe bacterial infections aiming to identify novel therapeutic strategies that safeguard organ integrity and promote survival. The main research question is how the gut microbiome and its dynamic changes during infection can influence systemic host responses, particularly through the availability of energy substrates. The project will combine in vivo mouse models, specific manipulation of the gut microbiome, metabolic phenotyping, molecular biology and immunology techniques, and integrative longitudinal metabolomics.
Your responsibilities:
* Perform in vivo and in vitro experiments with life pathogens and work independently towards your doctoral research project
* Analyse project results, generate figures for publications, and write scientific manuscripts for publication
• Present your results at local, national, and international meetings and conferences
* Work closely together with other experimental and computational researchers in the research group and within the Cluster
• Assist with training and supervising other researchers (e.g. student assistants, BSc students)
* Contribute to the friendly, welcoming, and collaborative environment in our team
Your profile:
* MSc in biological sciences / microbiology / immunology / biochemistry or closely related disciplines. Candidates in the final stages of obtaining their MSc are encouraged to apply
* Laboratory experience with in vivo experiments, immunology and microbiome is desired
* Strong enthusiasm for collaborative, interdisciplinary research in the described field
• Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
