At the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, we bring together the expertise of our employees to drive medical progress forward. Our focus is on cell and gene therapy, pharmaceuticals and vaccines, molecular and immune diagnostics, as well as other innovative fields. We are home to scientists, engineers, laboratory technicians, and administrative staff who all dedicate their work to advancing health.
Do you want to finally put your theoretical knowledge from your studies into practice and gain exciting insights into cutting-edge interdisciplinary research? Then you’ve come to the right place!
What you will do
For our interdisciplinary research group »MicroDiagnostics« at our Leipzig site, we are looking for a student to work on a Master’s thesis as soon as possible. Within the scope of your thesis, you will work at the interface of life sciences, engineering, and medicine and support the development of innovative microfluidic Organ-on-a-Chip systems (OoC systems). In doing so, you will contribute directly to applied research in the field of immunological cell analysis. These exciting tasks await you:
* Microfabrication and prototypical production of microfluidic chips
* Cultivation of human cells (e.g., immune cells and tumor cells) in OoC systems
* Performing imaging experiments using light and fluorescence microscopy
* Quantitative image analysis and evaluation of immunological responses
* Molecular biological analyses (e.g., qPCR) to characterize cellular responses
What you bring to the table
* Enrollment as a student in life sciences, biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, medical engineering, or a related field
* Initial experience in cell culture techniques and ideally in microscopy and/or microfluidics
* Good English skills, as English is partly the working language in the lab
* You approach new challenges with curiosity and a solution-oriented mindset, are characterized by an independent and careful working style, and enjoy working in a team.
What you can expect
* With our close ties to industry, we combine creative research freedom with genuine value creation – and all of this with a societal benefit. Through your commitment, you help shape the medicine of tomorrow and gain fascinating insights into Europe’s leading organization for applied research.
* You will be part of an interdisciplinary and international team that treats you as an equal and gives you the chance to contribute your own ideas. You will gain valuable preparation for future research positions by applying many relevant scientific techniques and expanding your skills in independently planning experimental work.
* Cutting-edge research requires cutting-edge equipment: across almost 8,000 m² of lab space, we offer everything a researcher could wish for. You can expect modern, well-equipped laboratories with direct access to microfabrication, cell biology, and analytics facilities.
* With flexible hours that fit your studies, we enable you to manage your time freely and independently.
Please note: We cannot offer remuneration for the writing of theses. However, you can expect an exciting research topic and intensive professional supervision.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
