Internship: 3D Research Engineer

Within all our core markets we see a shift towards using more 3D content and representations and obtaining a better understanding of 3D content. In this light the following possible research topics can be further explored:

3D segmentation:

Segmentation refers to the process of dividing a two-dimensional image into meaningful regions or segments, typically to identify and isolate objects, boundaries, or areas of interest. It's a key technique in computer vision and image processing. Segmentation on 3D representations is a novel technique, where a lot of research remains to be done. The student could work on this topic investigating 3D segmentation optimized for the use cases relevant to Barco.

4D Gaussian Splats

Gaussian Splatting is a cutting-edge technique in 3D graphics and neural rendering that represents scenes using 3D Gaussians instead of traditional meshes or voxels. It’s particularly known for enabling real-time rendering of photorealistic scenes from multi-view images. The student could do research on “moving” Gaussian splatting implementations (4D gaussians), which are used to represent dynamic scenes.

Generative 3d content creation

The field of 3D content creation is undergoing a profound transformation driven by generative artificial intelligence. Historically, creating detailed 3D assets, represented by triangular or quad meshes, was a manual, time-intensive process requiring expert modelers. Today, AI-based methods, particularly those converting text-to-3D or image-to-3D, are democratizing and accelerating this pipeline, opening new frontiers for efficiency and creativity across multiple industries. The student could do research on the different mechanisms to create 3D content applied to relevant Barco domains
