Manager Europe Payments - Payment Services at Mainz-Kastel District Office (Germany) Fulltime

I. SUMMARY

The Manager Europe Payments needs to be experienced in overseeing the full lifecycle of payment operations and item processing activities. This role involves managing electronic and manual payment processes, ensuring compliance, streamlining operations, and controlling the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions such as ACH, wires, SEPA, SWIFT, BACS and check deposits. The manager has to ensure that all clearing systems and processes in the EUR, GBP and USD currencies are up-to-date and adhere to both European and in-country legislation. The manager needs to be well informed of ongoing payment system trends, legislative requirements and recommends application updates and purchases to meet those. This position includes overseeing projects which are directly related to the department's operation and participation in cross-functional projects involving payment initiatives, systems migrations, or regulatory updates. The Manager Payment Services and the Manager Item Processing report directly to this role. The position requires strong operational expertise in payment systems, item processing, and banking operations, with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and process optimization.

II. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Key Responsibilities:

* Oversee daily operations for outgoing and incoming payments including ACH, wire transfers, SEPA, SWIFT, BACS and instant/faster payments.
* Ensure timely processing, posting, and support during reconciliation of all payment transactions.
* Manage relationships with payment processors, financial institutions, and third-party vendors.
* Monitor fraud indicators and support risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with compliance teams.
* Analyze payment data and prepare operational and financial performance reports.
* Drive automation and system improvements to optimize transaction processing workflows.
* Oversee all aspects of item processing including check deposits, returns, corrections, and clearing operations.
* Ensure compliance with country specific regulations, rules, schemes and internal procedures.
* Coordinate balancing, support reconciliation, and exception handling for all processed items.
* Resolve discrepancies in collaboration with internal departments and external partners.
* Maintain detailed records of processed items for audit and regulatory review.
* Support system upgrades, testing, and implementation of new tools related to item processing.
* Ensure adherence to applicable regulations including AML/BSA, and OFAC.
* Implement and maintain internal controls for secure and compliant processing environments.
* Coordinate and/or participate in internal audits, risk assessments, and remediation activities.
* Lead the Item processing Manager and Payment Services Manager; provide training, coaching, and performance evaluations for the department managers.
* Collaborate with Operations Manager, IT, finance, customer service, and compliance teams to align processes and goals.
* Participate in cross-functional projects involving payment initiatives, system migrations, or regulatory updates.
* Provides detailed updates to Europe Operations Manager on a weekly basis.
* Attends meetings, workshops, and seminars to maintain and develop current knowledge of European payment processing.
* Other duties as assigned.

III. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education and Knowledge

* Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
* 4–6+ years of experience in payments processing and/or item processing, preferably in a financial institution or fintech environment.
* Strong understanding of payment networks (ACH, SWIFT, Fedwire, SWIFT, BACS), check processing, and digital payment systems.
* Experience with payment processors, core banking systems, and reconciliation processes.
* Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
* Familiarity with compliance regulations and industry standards related to payments and financial operations.

B. Skills

* Flexible, logical and analytical thinker.
* Excellent ability to negotiate and communicate at all levels in the organization.
* Fluency in oral and written German and English
* Excellent management skills.
* Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft M365 environment.
