Accelerated Materials Development PhD Position
At our leading research facility, we are seeking a talented individual to join our team in the field of materials science. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary project aimed at developing accelerated materials development techniques using high-throughput and AI approaches.
The primary objective of this project is to establish a data-driven workflow for rapid microstructure-property optimization in steels. This involves developing and applying machine learning methods, generating synthetic microstructures, performing descriptor extraction and micromechanical simulations, and varying material processing parameters to achieve diverse microstructures and mechanical properties.
In addition to these tasks, the PhD student will also perform experimental characterizations of additive-manufactured and heat-treated steels using state-of-the-art methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nanoindentation.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* A completed university degree in a relevant field, such as data science, materials science, mechanical engineering, or physics, with a strong background in machine learning or simulation.
* Practical experience in at least one programming language, preferably Python.
* Ideal candidates will have some practical experience in material characterization methods.
* Strong analytical thinking, systematic approach, independence, reliability, and excellent cooperation and communication skills.
* Excellent written and spoken English skills.

We offer a four-year PhD position with a salary grade 13 TVöD-Bund (up to 100%) and additionally 60% of a monthly salary as special payment ('Christmas bonus'). Further information on doctoral degrees at our organization is available on our website.
