Salary is based on the TV-L (Collective Agreement for Public

At the Institute for Highway Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, we develop solutions for safe, efficient, and intelligent road infrastructure. Our work combines infrastructure, sensor technology, artificial intelligence, and digitalization.
This position focuses on artificial intelligence and digital twins for monitoring road infrastructure. Based on sensor data, digital models, test data, and field data, we investigate how road infrastructure reacts to traffic, climate, and usage. The goal is to extract actionable knowledge from complex infrastructure data for monitoring, maintenance planning, and digital road systems.
Applicants should hold a university degree, preferably a Master's degree (or equivalent) in artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, electrical engineering, robotics, applied mathematics, physics, computer engineering, civil engineering, or a related field.
We are looking for individuals with excellent programming skills and a strong methodological approach. A passion for developing original solutions, rather than simply using existing software packages, is essential. Practical programming experience, for example in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages, is required.
Experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analysis, time series analysis, data fusion, optimization, digital twins, digital infrastructure models, infrastructure monitoring, or decision support systems is advantageous.
The ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment is crucial. Excellent English skills are expected. German language skills are a plus, as is the willingness to further develop them.
This position offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD in the field of artificial intelligence and digital twins for road infrastructure. The focus is on the analysis, interpretation, and integration of infrastructure data into digital models that support monitoring, evaluation, and decision-making.
This includes the evaluation of sensor data, time series analysis, data fusion, data-driven modeling, condition assessment, anomaly detection, and the automated interpretation of infrastructure behavior under real-world operating conditions.
We are seeking an individual interested in developing their own methods and robust data processing chains for scientific and engineering applications. These applications lie in the areas of smart infrastructure, digital twins, road monitoring, and predictive maintenance.
The successful candidate will participate in research projects, publish scientific findings, and pursue a PhD in this field.
