Duties Description The School of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Old Westbury seeks a dedicated Academic Advisor to support student engagement, academic success, and retention. This role primarily advises juniors, seniors, and new transfer students, helping them navigate their academic journey and build a strong foundation for their undergraduate degree.
The ideal candidate is passionate about student development and brings experience working with underrepresented, first-generation, and non-traditional student populations.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide comprehensive academic advising for juniors, seniors, and new transfer students in the School of Arts and Sciences.
Guide students in course selection aligned with degree requirements and personal/professional goals.
Assist students in creating academic plans to ensure timely progress toward graduation.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date advisement records.
Offer advising sessions that may include:
Degree planning and major exploration
Explanation of graduation requirements
Coaching in time management and study skills
Referrals to appropriate campus resources
Training on student platforms and online tools
Support students with cross-registration processes and documentation.
Collaborate with key campus offices, including:
Orientation
Transfer Services
Career Planning and Development
Partner with department chairs, faculty, and professional advisors from the Schools of Education and Business to ensure consistent student support.
Participate in the development and delivery of faculty training related to advising tools and practices.
Remain informed of institutional policies, program requirements, and SUNY-wide academic standards.
Participate in assessment and improvement initiatives related to advising, retention, and student success.
Maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate evening and occasional weekend commitments.
Minimum Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in academic advising or a related field in higher education.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
Experience working with student information systems and advising platforms.
Demonstrated commitment to supporting a culturally diverse, first-generation, and/or non-traditional student population.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Ellucian Banner, EAB Navigate, and Degree Works.
Familiarity with the SUNY system, including liberal education/general education requirements.
Experience designing or delivering faculty training related to academic advising.
