This leader will grow Axios Local to 100+ cities by developing and proving multiple models for profitable expansion. It will report into the COO.Why it Matters: We want to bring smart, trustworthy local news to every community in America.We’ve cracked the code on a product readers love – a daily newsletter that’s a smart guide to what matters in local news, business and community.By mid-year, Axios Local will be in 34 communities that encompass over 100 million Americans. Over 2 million subscribe to our newsletters.We’re expanding revenue at a rapid clip and doubled local dollars in 2024.The Details: The ideal candidate is a mix of entrepreneur and operator who thinks urgently and creatively about scale. Specific objectives are:Lead vision for a technical and operational system – with automation at its core – to drive scale into the hundredsTest content and business partnerships that strengthen Axios Local’s business model and productPush existing, more mature cities into margin-boosters that fund expansion and experimentation elsewhere in Axios LocalResponsibilitiesDevelop short- and long-term plans that achieve our financial, editorial and growth goalsOwn the P&L for Axios Local, including investment needs and accountabilityOversee cross-functional operation of leaders including editorial, revenue, membership, marketing, product/tech and comms.Note: these leaders will directly report into their functional leads, i.e. CRO, Editor-in-Chief, CTOWork closely with CTO on a tech and automation roadmap that unlocks rapid scaleLead evolution of our products for readers - including newsletter, social, events, membership and more - in ways that align with monetizationContinuously iterate on organization structures and headcount that achieve our goals, in the leanest way possibleStay connected to the landscape of local media. Be expert on new developments, collaboration opportunities and competitionSeek and lead relationships with major partners that can enhance the business (i.e. current deal with OpenAI)Drive a culture of speed, experimentation and excellenceSkills & Experience15+ years of digital media or mid-stage startup experience. Proven record of scaling businesses and managing large-scale operationsExceptional communicator who can represent Axios Local internally and externallyThrives in a cross-functional environmentHas experience at the intersection of business, editorial and technologyAble to make decisions fast amid constant trade-offsSavvy at leading with both authority and influenceStrong bias toward action and accountabilityStarting salary for this role is in the range of $250,000 - $300,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country.
