The German Language Instructor is a full-time position (40 hrs./week) at NYU Berlin’s Academic Center located in the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. The German Language Instructor works directly with the German Language Coordinator and teaches German language classes at all levels, provides assistance for the language instructor and all aspects of the German program, including academic support of students, support for classes and lecturers, as well as extra-curricular and public events. Principal Accountabilities Teaching (70%) Teach five German language courses per academic year at varying proficiency levels (beginner to advanced). Provide weekly office hours to support students with course content, language acquisition, and academic advising. Plan, organize and lead German language-related events and excursions, and field trips during the semesters, the summer and orientation days. Attend regular team meetings and professional development trainings to ensure alignment with departmental goals and pedagogical best practices. Substitute for other instructors and lead tutorials as needed on select occasions. Program Development (30%) Assist the Language Coordinator in preparing syllabi, course-related materials, and administrative tasks for the academic year and the summer term. Develop new teaching formats, digital content, and innovative learning resources to enhance curriculum quality and student engagement. Required Education Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in German studies. Required Experience Teaching experience at all language levels. Experience in organizing course-related excursions and cultural events. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Fluency in German and English. High creative potential, inventiveness and high-quality solutions in order to contribute to the ongoing development and professionalization of the German program and the German courses. Flexibility and spontaneity to adapt effectively to changing circumstances and challenges. Excellent intercultural and interpersonal communication skills, along with a willingness to undertake representative tasks. A genuine interest in engaging with a diverse group of international students and faculty each semester. A strong sense of teamwork combined with the ability to work independently. Proficiency in presentation, classroom, and office technology- Familiarity with macOS, Microsoft Windows, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office. Required Work permit A valid work permit for Germany through the end of the contract. Preferred Experience, Skills and Abilities Teaching international student groups in Germany. University degree in German as a foreign language.
