Direct message the job poster from Copernicus ECMWF

Climate Science | Climate adaptation | Ocean Governance | Blue Economy | Policy |

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is opening a new position for a talented and motivated Scientific Officer – Extreme Event Attribution (A2) to join our Forecast and Services Department. This new position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a rapidly evolving area of climate science with high societal relevance — understanding and communicating how climate change influences extreme weather events.

You will play a central role in the operationalisation of extreme event monitoring and attribution as part of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), delivered by ECMWF on behalf of the European Union. C3S has an extensive programme of climate monitoring activities based on different datasets including reanalyses and observations, accessible from C3S' Climate Data Store (CDS). The monitoring products include timely reports, interactive web applications and data visualisations to engage with a broad audience in easily accessible manner and are delivered within an operational framework. With the impacts of extreme events becoming more obvious and with huge scientific advances in understanding how they are changing in a warming world, C3S is increasing its portfolio of products in the realm of extreme events. Part of this effort is an operational extreme events monitoring and attribution service implemented by external partners in collaboration with ECMWF.

As Scientific Officer, you will support the development, delivery, and communication of extreme event monitoring and attribution products. You will act as a technical focal point, coordinating efforts between ECMWF teams and external service providers, and ensuring high-quality, timely outputs. You will also contribute to the scientific evolution of the service and help communicate findings to a wide range of stakeholders.

Your responsibilities

Act as operational contact point at ECMWF for the service contract on operational extreme event monitoring and attribution, liaise and coordinate the work with our contractor and teams at ECMWF.

Ensure timely delivery of extreme events monitoring and attribution products and review quality thereof.

Leverage your expertise on extreme events monitoring and attribution, as well as your software knowledge to propose new operational climate information products and contribute to their development, evaluation and documentation.

Contribute to the communication of extreme events monitoring and attribution products to a range of stakeholders.

Support the development of diagnostics for other ECMWF products.

What we are looking for

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive and constructive approach

Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills

Positive attitude with a willingness to embrace change and new challenges

Excellent coordination, planning and organisational skills with an attention to detail

Dedication and enthusiasm to work efficiently and complete diverse tasks in a timely manner both independently and in a team.

Ability to work collaboratively in an international environment and with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Education

An advanced university degree (EQF Level 7 or above) in a relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent experience, is essential.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated experience in the field of extreme event attribution, with in-depth scientific experience in commonly applied extreme events monitoring and attribution methods being an advantage.

Proficiency in Python or similar scientific programming languages in a Linux-based environment.

Experience in working with large environmental or geophysical datasets such as climate observations and climate simulations.

Proven ability to convey complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience working in an operational setting is an advantage.

Experience providing technical support to programme management is an advantage.
