The general anesthesiologist role involves administering anesthetics at various locations throughout the region. The anesthesiologist will conduct patient evaluations, medical histories, and examination to develop a comprehensive anesthetic plan. This includes working with patients and medically supervising certified registered nurse anesthetists to ensure safe care and optimal outcomes.
Duties/Responsibilities:
* Administers general and regional anesthetics and pain medication as needed before, during, and after surgery and other procedures.
* Provides anesthesia maintenance and adjustment before, during, and after procedures.
* Orders diagnostic tests when necessary.
* Collaborates closely with surgical specialists to deliver high-quality care.
* Performs venous and arterial punctures.
* Provides post-anesthesia care and evaluation.
* Monitors mechanical ventilation and communicates effectively with patients, their families, and caregivers.
* Responds appropriately to adverse reactions and complications.
* Evaluates patient histories, lab results, and surgical plans to determine an appropriate anesthesia and pain management strategy.
* Monitors patient fluid, blood, and electrolyte balance, and other vital signs and critical functions during procedures.
* Conducts tracheal intubation, airway management, and extubation.
* Monitors patients following procedures to determine when they can be safely moved from one stage of recovery to the next.
* Takes detailed medical history to determine possible allergic or negative reactions to medication.
* Supervises registered nurse anesthetists and other technical staff.
* Mentors and supervises anesthesiology interns, residents, and fellows.
Education and Experience:
* Hold a medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school.
* Be board certified or eligible (BC/BE) in anesthesiology.
* Possess strong regional skills, fellowship not required.
* Hold a valid VA state medical license.
* Have minimum 3+ years experience providing anesthetics in a high acuity or similar setting.
