Duties Description Under the general direction and supervision of higher-level personnel, the selected candidate may be engaged in the performance or coordination of the following duties, tasks and/or activities at a facility primarily involved in the operation and maintenance of day-use areas, swimming areas including beaches and pools, bathhouses, parking fields, buildings and equipment at Jones Beach State Park.
• Acts as shift supervisor for an assigned area and directs and coordinates full-time and seasonal staff in the performance of litter control, grounds upkeep, landscaping, snow and ice control, restroom facilities (supplies/cleanliness), and other tasks and/or activities as described.
• Conducts inspections of assigned area for safety hazards and need for skilled trades maintenance and repair; coordinates corrective actions.
• Operates light trucks, passenger vehicles, tractors, skid steer loader, landscape equipment and other small equipment as required.
• Performs routine maintenance and repairs on various equipment used including changing cutting blades, tightening or changing belts, fueling or mixing fuel according to machinery specifications etc.
• May operate industrial wheeled tractors and low center-of-gravity tractors which may be equipped with, but not limited to the following interchangeable attachments: 80" rotary or 7-gang-pull mowers, augers, cyclone and gravity spreaders, york rake etc.
• Investigates incidents or unusual occurrences and completes necessary reports.
• Inspects concession areas to assure compliance with contractual standards for safety and health; completes required reports and notifies supervisor of any problems and makes recommendations for correction of deficiencies.
• Trains staff in the proper use of small hand tools and in the operation and maintenance of lawn mowing equipment, tractors and power edging tools.
• Coordinates execution of recreation events and provides evaluations of these events.
• Collects and accounts for park revenue in assigned areas; prepares reports as required.
• Prepares and completes seasonal evaluations as required for supervisor review and approval.
• Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility.
In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree*, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
