As a Field Service Engineer for the Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD), you will perform on-site installation, servicing and repair of complex equipment. You will investigate and approve the quality and functionality of equipment, instruct customers in the operation and maintenance of systems, and act as a technical contact for assigned service activities.
You will conduct on-site installations of Thermo Fisher Scientific Electron Microscopes and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) systems and their associated options, ensuring high customer satisfaction and compliance with company standards.
Location:
The Field Service Engineer should ideally be based in the Rhein-Main area, Karlsruhe, or Munich. The role involves travel within the southern region as well as internationally and is home office–based.
A Day in the Life
1. Perform remote and on-site troubleshooting, repair and installation of our Electron Microscope and X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) portfolio
2. Provide on-site training related to maintenance and basic operation
3. Support local spare parts inventory management
4. Coordinate and dispatch third-party service providers when required and follow up to ensure customer satisfaction
5. Monitor the status of customer service contracts and support scheduling of preventive maintenance visits
6. Ensure that all documentation related to service activities (Field Service Reports, Service Work Orders, Quotes) is completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner
7. Take ownership of assigned service tickets after remote diagnosis and manage technical and administrative resolution including customer communication until closure
Keys to Success
Education
8. Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific field (Engineering or Physics preferred)
9. Graduates must have knowledge of Electron Microscopy and/or X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
10. A full education in TEM or XPS is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree
Experience
11. 5 years of professional experience in a related scientific, technical and/or customer-facing service role desired
Technical Competencies
12. Solid proficiency in instrument systems technology including electronics, precision mechanics, vacuum technology, high voltage systems, chemistry and software technology
13. Experience in troubleshooting vacuum and high voltage systems; experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems is an advantage
14. Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical documentation
15. Familiarity with Windows-based software environments
16. Ability to perform standard software installations and updates

Additional Requirements
21. Fluent in English; German preferred
22. Willingness to travel frequently, often on short notice, to different customer sites in the Service Area
23. International travel up to approximately 30%, depending on place of residence
24. Valid driver’s license (Class B)
