Job Description
The United Nations University Vice-Rectorate in Europe (UNU-VIE), established in 2007 in Bonn, Germany, is one of two UNU Vice-Rectorates and the only one located in Europe. It supports the institutional development of UNU, facilitates collaboration across UNU and the UN, as well as fosters strategic partnerships – particularly with the Global South – and shares knowledge and expertise through the development of joint activities and projects. UNU-VIE conducts frontier research reinforcing existing UNU programming and supporting the implementation of key UN priorities. More information about UNU-VIE can be found here: https://unu.edu/vie.
The Pan African Cooperation and Educational Technologies (PACET) division focuses on improving livelihoods towards self-sufficiency and equality in the Global South. The division aims to advance emerging solutions through innovative research, incubation of solutions, and promotion of strategic responses aligned with Global South agendas and UN priorities. Its research pillars include agri-food systems innovation, green innovations, digitalization and entrepreneurship, and educational technologies, all aimed at empowering youth, women, and communities, fostering innovation, and supporting policy development.
Responsibilities:
Manage the PACET Division:
* Lead and manage the team, including planning, mentoring, performance appraisals, and recruitment;
* Oversee daily operations, budget, personnel planning, and administrative policies;
* Develop a long-term strategy focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship, and educational technologies;
* Promote academic excellence and enhance global visibility;
* Serve as a Certifying Officer and Officer-in-Charge when assigned.
Lead research, knowledge management, and dissemination:
* Conduct frontier research and promote the use of scientific knowledge;
* Publish findings in peer-reviewed outlets and disseminate to broader audiences via media and social media;
Resource mobilization:
* Develop and implement resource mobilization strategies;
* Manage financial resources and ensure compliance;
* Establish partnerships with stakeholders and donors;
* Prepare reports and negotiate agreements.
Education and training:
* Design and manage e-learning activities;
* Supervise Master’s and PhD students.
Representation and partnerships:
* Engage in policy processes and promote partnerships with UN agencies, research networks, universities, and other stakeholders;
* Represent UNU at conferences and on scientific networks;
* Ensure UNU’s reputation as a trustworthy partner.
Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in environmental sciences, natural sciences, or relevant field;
* Minimum five years' experience in environmental sciences, research management, preferably in an international, multicultural environment;
* Experience in networking, fundraising, and administrative management;
* Excellent English communication skills; knowledge of French and other UN languages is a plus;
* Experience working in Africa is desirable.
