Job Description:
We are seeking a junior researcher or postdoctoral scientist to estimate future fire risk using an updated SPITFIRE model based on future projections of temperature, surface winds and precipitation obtained from CMIP6 models for certain fire-prone Mediterranean regions.
* Analyse atmospheric conditions leading to increased fire weather index and burned area in ERA5 reanalysis over the Mediterranean
* Test these conditions in CMIP6 models to assess future changes in patterns under different global warming scenarios
The successful candidate will have a solid background in climate and atmospheric sciences, and extreme weather ideally supported by knowledge of machine learning and time series analysis.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Education: MSc or PhD degree in physics, mathematics/statistics, climate science or a related discipline
Background: Climate and atmospheric sciences, extreme weather, machine learning and time series analysis
Skills: Practical experience with High Performance Computing, scientific programming and coding skills with e.g. Python/Matlab/R
